    6 Do’s of Christmas

It’s that time of the season. Christmas trees and wrapping paper are everywhere. Sale signs are in the windows of every shop. Windows are dressed to the hilt with mannequins in their best apparel and accessories to die for. People are shopping and carrying bags with purchases from their favorite stores and all it does is remind you of how you dread shopping and that you haven’t even begun. If you’re just now getting started on your shopping list for the holidays you’re not the only one but before you hit the stores for your purchases keep these “do’s” in mind.

Burger King: Death of the king

The other day I promised the kids  Burger King and lo and behold as we pulled up I saw an empty parking lot.  It was  1pm and not a soul was around for lunch.  Odd, I thought to myself and suddenly I saw it.  The  door handles were wrapped with several signs on the door and one stating in big,  bold black letters “Closed: Do not Open.”

Suddenly, I was saddened.  The king was dead.  Occasionally, I love a double whopper with cheese, minus the mayo  but not having a burger is not the reason for being sad.  The real culprit behind feeling this way was seeing another business go under.  Another 50 people who  lost their jobs.  Another person unemployed with a family to feed. Another person trying to make ends meet and not having any idea how to go about it.  When is this recession going to get better?  Although politics has much to do with the  issues at hand it  has now become  about basic survival skills.

So I round the corner in hopes to pick up a book on physiology at the local Barnes and Noble and to my surprise the doors were wrapped and papers covered the windows.  Another family with mouths to feed…

    Confessions of a glorious day

Today was glorious outside. Just glorious. The sun was shining and the temperature was a fabulous 77degrees in the Windy City. The winter here is a hard, long one and this Georgia Peach has had a difficult time acclimating. Oddly, the cold has litttle to do with it but it’s the dreary, gray, monochromatic look of the clouds that present themselves day-in and day-out. For someone who finds the sunshine to be the source of all things “happy” loving and hating Chicago has become a double-edged-sword. I love all there is offered here but the gray can darken my mood and make me wonder why I would leave the nine glorious months of warm weather in the South for nine months that are “colder-than-a-well-diggers-arse-in-January.”

Today though, the wind was blowing and the sun shone on my back; which was adorned by a “wife-beater,” a mini, and a pair of mid-calf fur covered boots. Suddenly, standing in the sun I realized I had the youthful style of a Mid-Westerner with these silly boots. I had to laugh at myself because in my previous life I would not have touched a pair of these boots with a ten-foot-pole. Stilettos have always been the name of my game and next to my five pair of winter boots are a gorgeous line of 65+ stiletto’s waiting for their turn in the sun.

     Next time, my lovies…

    My Wonder Years

As I was driving home from Super Wal-Mart, one of my most detested yet most often visited stores, I couldn’t help but think about some of the clothes that are so en vogue right now. While in the store I looked at the popular styles and at the many teenagers and young adults who were wearing them and felt like I was back in middle and high school. Ruffles, mini’s, and leggings were hanging off the H-racks waiting for a pair of young legs to give them a new home. And suddenly, I was nostalgic. Fashion is cyclical and unbelievably I was wearing leggings during my high school years and am almost ashamed to admit I do own a couple of pair now. I could not help but think about being in high school, which was more than 16 years ago and wearing the styles that are so fashionable today. At moments, I can’t help but wonder “what was I thinking?”  read more…
